Les Jupes
Les Jupes
Les Jupes are a new band from the centre of Canada versed in expansive musical landscapes, sharp lyrics and an observer’s eye for the world. They are four Anglos with a French name making big, broad and determined music. And they are at the centre of a prairie renaissance growing around Head In The Sand Records.

Their debut album Modern Myths is built on Michael Petkau Falk’s baritone charging through waves of psychedelia and driving rhythms. Pounding, introspective, at times fierce, at times playful. It is purposefully dyslexic - an echo of the characters entombed and a mirror of the writer. Having moved to Montreal and quitting music in 2005, this album culminates the creative turnaround of “the patron saint of the Winnipeg music scene” (Jaxon Haldane) - a process which also brought us the Record Of The Week Club in 2009.

Modern Myths was recorded over a year and a half when Montreal producer/engineer Marcus Paquin (frontman of Last Gang's Silver Starling) found time from working on Arcade Fire's The Suburbs. Marcus and Mike have that rare magic found in friends who share similar musical visions.

The process of recording Modern Myths also brought turnover - one version of Les Jupes slowly dissipated and another has come to take its place. David Schellenberg (The Playing Cards), Adam Klassen and Kelly Beaton (All Of Your Friends) have brought new passion and skill to this song cycle and anticipation for next wave of songs. What began as a band quickly formed around a one-off gig has grown into a powerful live act excited to continue connecting with audiences across Canada and around the world.

And what of the songs? There is one for Nikita Khruschev, Stalin’s Ukranian heir and cold-war architect. There is one for someone wrestling with depression and an eating disorder. There is one for Chicago. There is (ironically enough) one for people who take things too seriously. There is Awake, My Ghost! written the day before a kind man and passionate music-lover took his own life. And there is One Solemn Oath, the album’s thematic centre.

Petkau Falk has been the quiet backbone behind a musical resurgence coming from Winnipeg. He produced the Record Of The Week Club which captured the imagination of music fans worldwide for its spontaneous and collaborative creativity. He played guitar, keys and trumpet in the WCMA-winning Liptonians and co-produced their forthcoming sophomore album. He runs Head In The Sand Records, home to Royal Canoe and the rest of this family. And he is the Artistic Director of Winnipeg’s beloved West End Cultural Centre.
The Soft White Sixties
The Soft White Sixties
San Francisco's The Soft White Sixties are a hard-driving, original rock and roll band that delivers R&B grooves and pop hooks with the transformative power of raw soul.

"Maximum R&B is what was used to describe The Who back in their prime, and Bay Area boys The Soft White Sixties are prime candidates to take that description as their own...the quintet are laying down a sinfully soulful rock sound that always goes down smooth."
- Andrew Pohl, Noise Pop

"Attendees who bump the seminal Nuggets garage rock compilations might suggest that a concoction of fun-loving, acid-tinged soul and bluesy guitar-rock co-indicates, on paper, gleefully chaotic and uneven musicianship. Perish the thought: the Sixties mold their muse into a modern soul-rock machine via a tight performance unencumbered by the large accompanying volumes of booze...Beyond the swamp-rock odes and sunny psychedelic blues, these guys were obviously having fun getting their work done."
- Mike Orne, SF Weekly
Tulip Wars
Tulip Wars
We write, sing, and play a few odds and ends in the brimming Tulip Wars band, based out of our Mile High City, Denver, CO. Ma Rainey,
Bessie Smith, Aretha, Lady Bo, Patti Smith, Chicago Liberations Band,
Warpaint, Neko Case, Dolly Parton (yup, that one), and the many
weirdo, whacko, enerjacko friends who have inspired us through their
creativity, confidence, and friendship are the cumulative motivations
for why we, like a sweaty corn dog on the 4th of July, are positively
jubilant to play for you. Perhaps we can all have a picnic together, I'll make crumpets if you bring the Jam.
Kenny Lee Young (Of Pearls For Breakfast)
Kenny Lee Young (Of Pearls For Breakfast)
Kenny was born in Bellevue, WA, but was raised in Midland and Sanford, MI. He began singing in choirs at a very young age up through high school. During this time, Kenny was the lead singer in a garage band group called "Rook" which focused on alternative rock.
It wasn't until going to college at Central Michigan University where he picked up the guitar as a freshman. He began winning talent shows and playing in local coffee shops and bars throughout the next few years, and at the age of 22 was when he released his first album "All Sides of the Spectrum".
Not long after the release, Kenny moved to Denver, CO. His solo career really took a leap forward where made his mark by opening up for Common at CSU and Brad Corrigan from Dispatch at DU. He also released and EP in 2007 called "No Time to Waste" as well as three live albums. He has also been the front man for projects like "Left Hand Cheater", "MyFiend Tom", and "Pearls for Breakfast" while maintaining his solo career.
Currently you can see Kenny Lee Young playing at many venues, bars, restaurants, coffee shops, festivals, benefits, and weddings in Colorado. He plans to be recording a new album in the summer of 2012.
